The Bank of England has maintained the base rate at its highest level in 16 years but has indicated that it will lower rates along with other European banks in the coming months, possibly as early as early June.

The Bank of England kept the base rate at 5.25% following the policymakers' meeting. But in a fresh sign that a move is getting closer, two of the nine members of its Monetary Policy Committee voted to lower the key rate to 5%.

The next meetings are scheduled for June and August. If cuts occur in both meetings, the BOE will likely move before the Federal Reserve, which is expected to maintain rates longer. If the Fed cuts rates, the pound risks declining in value against the U.S. dollar, increasing the prices of imported goods and services.

BOE Governor Andrew Bailey told reporters after the policy decision was announced, "A change in the Bank rate in June is neither ruled out nor a fait accompli."

Inflation in the UK has steadily declined in recent months, and the BOE has indicated a likelihood of reaching the 2% target in April. However, official figures will not be released until May 22.

The BOE expects inflation to rise again by the end of this year as energy prices stabilize, before falling once more in the second half of 2025.

Ahead of the BOE announcement, investors see August as the month with the highest likelihood for the first rate cut.

영란은행은 기준금리를 16년 만에 최고 수준으로 유지했지만, 유럽 은행들과 함께 앞으로 몇 달간 금리를 인하할 예정이며 빠르면 6월 초에 인하할 것이라고 밝혔다.

영란은행은 정책 입안자 회의 후 기준 금리를 5.25%로 유지했다. 하지만 움직임이 가까워지고 있다는 새로운 신호로, 금융정책위원회의 아홉 명 중 두 명이 기준 금리를 5%로 낮추는 데 투표했다.

다음 회의는 6월과 8월에 예정되어 있다. 두 회의 모두에서 금리 인하가 이루어질 경우, BOE는 연방준비제도(연준)보다 먼저 움직일 가능성이 높으며, 연준은 금리를 더 오랫동안 유지할 것으로 예상된다. 연준이 금리를 인하할 경우, 파운드화 가치는 미국 달러 대비 하락하며, 수입 상품과 서비스의 가격이 상승할 위험이 있다.

BOE의 앤드루 베일리 총재는 정책 결정이 발표된 후 기자들에게 "6월에 기준금리 변경은 배제되지도 않았고, 확정된 것도 아니다"고 말했다.

영국의 인플레이션은 최근 몇 달 동안 꾸준히 하락했으며, BOE는 4월에 2% 목표를 달성할 가능성이 있다고 밝혔다. 그러나 공식 수치는 5월 22일까지는 공개되지 않았다.

BOE는 에너지 가격이 안정되면서 올해 말 인플레이션율이 다시 상승하고 2025년 하반기에는 다시 하락할 것으로 예상하고 있다.

BOE 발표를 앞두고 투자자들은 8월을 첫 번째 금리 인하 가능성이 가장 높은 달로 보고 있다.
