According to the UN, nearly one in ten children aged 5 to 17 worldwide work as a child. Among LEDCs, Bangladesh has one of the highest rates of child labor. The Bangladesh government has attempted to reduce child labor through various legislative policies. Nevertheless, further measures are necessary to eliminate it.
The greatest cause of child labor in Bangladesh is poverty. According to UNICEF (2010), 46% of working children live below the poverty line, which leads to many households needing children to work to support the family. Child labor supports family businesses in Bangladesh, where over 70% of the population depends on agriculture. In addition, the importance of education is not well-emphasized. Generations of child labor have reduced the significance of education, leading parents to value short-term earnings over education. Consequently, children are sent to work rather than to school, exacerbating the rate of child labor.
Child labor in Bangladesh significantly impacts society. The main concerns are child exploitation, lack of control, and exposure to hazardous conditions that risk children's well-being. Continuous poverty reveals a structural issue where the absence of better options leads children to exploitative work situations. Bangladesh neglects future human capital by sending children to work instead of educating them, hindering growth, and perpetuating poverty. Addressing child labor involves a comprehensive approach focusing on education, social welfare, and economic empowerment to end the poverty cycle and facilitate sustainable development.
Overcoming child labor in Bangladesh demands a strategy addressing poverty, lack of education, and social norms. Emphasizing education and providing economic opportunities are essential steps. Global teamwork and assistance are crucial in providing necessary tools and structures. Ensuring a secure, well-informed, and healthy childhood is crucial for Bangladesh's sustainable development.
